With a national debt approaching $17 trillion and rising, anybody can see that the government needs to spend less. However, zeroing out popular programs like the Land and Water Conservation Fund is not the answer. That is why I was happy to see our congresswoman, Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, stand up to support funding for the LWCF. I’m sure that position may irk some of her Republican colleagues but it is the right thing to do for her constituents.
As The Columbian reported in a July 26 story, “Herrera Beutler urged to protect conservation fund,” the program has provided matching grants for parks in the area and contributes to our quality of life. While we must all make sacrifices, getting rid of the fund would be short-sighted.
I have appreciated that Herrera Beutler has consistently approached our country’s issues using common sense and she has my support as she works to try to restore some of the funding for this program.
