Portland Thorns FC clinched a place in the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League playoffs Wednesday when last-place Washington claimed a lightning-shortened 1-0 victory Wednesday over Chicago. Portland could have clinched a playoff spot with a win or tie.

The Thorns backed into their playoff spot, however, losing 2-1 at Boston. Even worse for Portland, star forward Alex Morgan was injured in the defeat.

The team posted on its Twitter feed: “Initial reports encouraging, Alex Morgan sustained a left knee injury and will undergo further evaluation tomorrow.”

Morgan tweeted: “Hey everyone thanks for all the words of encouragement. Will go through further eval tomorrow and update everyone then. #positivethoughts”

Tiffany Weimer scored in the 52nd minute to give the Thorns a 1-0 lead.

Lianne Sanderson and Heather O’Reilly scored for Boston.
