Jets’ Ryan: No call yet on starting QB vs. Jags

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Rex Ryan says the New York Jets have not yet determined whether Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith will start the team’s next preseason game against Jacksonville on Saturday night.

Both Ryan and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg say Tuesday that there are “variables” involved, including Smith’s recovery from a mild ankle sprain. Smith was injured in the team’s preseason opener at Detroit last Friday night, but has not missed any practice time despite a noticeable limp. Smith was able to move around the field with only occasional signs of a limp Tuesday.

Ryan says the possibility of fans booing Sanchez will “absolutely not” have an effect on the decision for Saturday’s game.

Mornhinweg says it’s “too early to say” if one of the quarterbacks has taken the lead in the competition.
