NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Champions League contender Metalist Kharkiv should find out Wednesday if it will be expelled over a long-running match-fixing case.
Metalist lawyers attended a two-hour disciplinary hearing at UEFA headquarters on Tuesday, and the Champions League organizer said its judgment is expected within 24 hours.
If the Ukrainian club loses the ruling, it can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and possibly continue in the competition while that case is processed. Metalist is scheduled to play Aug. 21 at Schalke in the playoff round.
UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings last week after CAS dismissed the Metalist sports director’s appeal against a five-year ban imposed by the Ukrainian Football Federation. The official, Yevhen Krasnikov, was implicated in fixing an April 2008 league match against Karpaty Lviv.
