Broncos counting on offense to help young defense

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State coach Chris Petersen could barely conceal his grin when he recounted the opening drive by his first-team offense after Sunday’s fall scrimmage.

But it was the interception by safety Ebo Makinde in the end zone to squelch the scoring chance that turned Petersen’s grin into a big smile.

It’s also the kind of big play Petersen is counting on his young, revamped defense to make often this season.

The No. 19 Broncos head into the season opener at Washington with plenty of weapons on offense. The defense, however, has big holes to fill on the line and in the secondary.

The Broncos are favored to win the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference. But they also face a schedule featuring trips to BYU, Fresno State and San Diego State.
