NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops says redshirt freshman Trevor Knight will start at quarterback in the No. 16 Sooners’ opener at home against Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31.

The university reported the news Thursday on its athletic website.

Knight, junior Blake Bell and sophomore Kendall Thompson entered preseason practice as contenders for the job to replace four-year starter Landry Jones.

Thompson fractured a foot on the first day of practice, removing him from the competition.

Bell played some last season for the Sooners, mostly in the run-oriented “Belldozer” package, while Knight has never thrown a collegiate pass. He redshirted last season after a standout career at Reagan High School in San Antonio.
