CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Erick Torres scored two goals, the first on a penalty kick, and Chivas USA beat the New York Red Bulls 3-2 on Sunday.
Julio Morales also scored to help Chivas (5-14-6) win for the first time in more than a month and for only the second time since the end of March. Chivas hadn’t scored more than one goal in a game since April 27, a span of 16 games.
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made two big saves and defenders Marky Delgado and Bobby Burling saved shots off the goal line for Chivas.
Tim Cahill and Dax McCarty scored for the Red Bulls (11-9-6), both off Thierry Henry’s assists. New York would have claimed the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a victory.
Torres put Chivas ahead for good in first-half stoppage, converting a penalty kick after defender Ibrahim Sekagya barreled him over in New York’s box. Torres extended the lead off a rebound in the 81st minute.
