EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Giants have taken defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul off the physically unable to perform list.

New York announced the move Monday.

An All Pro in 2011, Pierre-Paul had disk surgery on his back in June. It is not known if Pierre-Paul will be ready to play in the regular-season opener at Dallas on Sept. 8.

Pierre-Paul had a subpar 2012 season. After recording 1612 sacks in helping the Giants win the Super Bowl in 2011, he had 10 less last year as New York posted a 9-7 record and missed the postseason.

In recent weeks, the former first-round pick said he played in pain last season.

New York closes the preseason on Thursday night at New England.
