ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Lions have released kicker Havard Rugland (HO-vahr ROOG-land) and cornerback Dequan Menzie.

Rugland became an Internet sensation after producing a YouTube video with a lot of quirky trick shots. The Lions signed the Norwegian in April 11 to give kicker David Akers some competition. Rugland, made each of his three field goals during the preseason.

A year ago, he was working at a child protective services facility in Norway. The 28-year-old Rugland had tryouts with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Detroit. The Lions were the only team to offer him a contract.

The Lions claimed Menzie off waivers in May from Kansas City. The Chiefs drafted Menzie last year in the fifth round.

The cuts were made Tuesday.
