Nationals recall Ryan Mattheus

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have recalled right-hander Ryan Mattheus from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned left-hander Xavier Cedeno to their top farm club.

The 29-year-old Mattheus was optioned to Syracuse on Aug. 15 to make room for right-hander Drew Storen. He allowed one earned run in 5 1-3 innings during five appearances with Syracuse.

Mattheus is 0-1 with a 6.26 ERA in 23 games with Washington this season. He missed 58 games earlier this year with a broken right hand.

The 27-year-old Cedeno did not allow a run in two relief appearances (1 1-3 innings) with Washington. He is 0-0 with a 9.39 ERA in seven relief appearances this season with the Nationals and Houston Astros.

Washington made the moved before Tuesday night’s game against Miami.
