YAKIMA — A ban on pit bull dogs remains in effect in Yakima.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the city council upheld the ban Tuesday at a meeting where most of the testimony was against the ban, first established in 1987.

Opponents say the law should punish bad pet owners, not dogs.

The city code enforcement manager said the ban promotes public safety by reducing the number of dangerous dogs in the city.
