DETROIT (AP) — Juwan Howard Jr. scored 17 points and had eight rebounds as Detroit beat Rhode Island 70-68 on Sunday.

The Titans did not make a field goal after Evan Bruinsma put Detroit ahead 67-62 with 3:17 left to play. But the Titans made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch and Rhode Island’s Biggie Minnis’ last-second drive to the basket fell short.

Bruinsma finished with 15 points for Detroit (5-5). The Titans made just 1 of 12 3-pointers, but their defense forced 14 turnovers, nine coming from steals.

Xavier Munford was 9-of-18 shooting and finished with 22 points for Rhode Island (6-5). Gilvydas Biruta had 14 points for the Rams and E.C. Matthews added 12.

Down 32-27 at halftime, Detroit opened the second half on an 8-3 run to tie the game at 35 with just under 16 minutes to play.
