Letter: Charge fee for cars requiring charge

The Columbian
Published: December 8, 2013, 4:00pm

A Dec. 5 story reported “15-cent hike in gas tax pushed” in the U.S. House of Representatives.

If the government raises the federal gasoline tax by 15 cents per gallon, I suggest the states should raise the yearly registration fees on all vehicles that are battery/gas operated, such as the Chevrolet Volt, Toyota Prius and others. By my calculation, an average car at 12,000 miles a year will pay between $50 and $100 more for fuel per year depending on the fuel mileage.

A flat $100 a year increase on registration fees for the above-mentioned vehicles and others like them would go directly to highway improvements.
