PORTLAND — The Clackamas County sheriff’s office is investigating an attack on a gay Portland man and his friend at Bagby Hot Springs as a possible hate crime.

Lt. Robert Wurpes told The Oregonian that the men met two strangers Dec. 2 while soaking in the hot springs in the Mount Hood National Forest. After the discussion turned to sexual orientation, the strangers attacked the two men, beating the Portland man on the head with a flashlight.

The strangers fled and the injured men were treated at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.
