Halfpipe surprise: White finishes second

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) — Shaun White fell on his first run, tweaked his ankle and wound up finishing a surprising second on the halfpipe at the Dew Tour on Saturday, the first qualifying event for the Sochi Olympics.

Greg Bretz, who finished 12th at the last Olympics, scored 91.40 on his first run and White came up a point shy of that on his second trip.

The second-place finish won’t hurt the two-time defending Olympic champion’s chances of making the U.S. team. This is one of five qualifying events and the riders get points for their two best performances.

Of more concern is White’s ankle. At the end of the contest, he walked with a slight limp. He said he only tweaked it and was going to ice it in preparation for Sunday’s slopestyle final.
