Letter: Helping own people a worthy goal

The Columbian
Published: December 18, 2013, 4:00pm

John Cannon’s Dec. 14 letter, “Train wreck predicted with ACA,” believes the Affordable Care Act “ruins a health care system that has been the envy of the world.” Really? If that is the case, why is it that every other industrialized nation on the planet has preferred universal health care to our system? As to thinking the program will “trash the entire free enterprise system,” Cannon might be interested to know that Government Accountability Office figures estimate the ACA will cost less than 5 percent of federal spending. Is Cannon saying he does not believe we should expend 5 percent of our wealth, in the “richest nation on Earth,” to help our own people?
