MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) — JaJuan Johnson scored 14 points and Marquette won its last tune-up before beginning Big East play by routing Samford, 71-48, on Saturday.
Todd Mayo and Deonte Burton had 13 points apiece for the Golden Eagles (8-5). The top four scorers came off the bench with Marquette’s reserves outscoring Samford’s bench 50-12.
Tim Williams scored 16 points and had nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (5-9). Raijon Kelly added 10 points.
Marquette took control of the game midway through the first half by penetrating the lane, getting fouled and making 14 of 19 free throws to lead 39-23 at halftime. Samford only made four of five free throws in the first half.
The Bulldogs never got within single digits in the second half and Marquette extended the lead to 57-37 on a dunk by Burton with 8 minutes left in the game.
