Letter: Amend mistake by high court

The Columbian
Published: December 28, 2013, 4:00pm

In 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the same rights as people, basically bestowing “personhood’ on corporations. In addition to this aberration, the ruling also allows corporations to contribute millions of dollars to legislation and candidates. These dollars can be given anonymously.

We want to change both of these mistakes. To this end, we here in Washington state have the opportunity to help overrule this unjust and misguided ruling.

The Washington state chapter of Move To Amend, a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to social and economic justice, has scheduled a clear and precise presentation concerning this problem. Our meeting will be held at the downtown Vancouver Community Library at C Street and Evergreen Boulevard. This will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 4. The public is encouraged to attend; attendance is free.
