CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Trey Sumler scored a career-high 40 points to lead Western Carolina over NAIA Milligan 106-72 on Monday night.

Sumler was 13 of 21 from the field, 7 of 10 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line to become the first player to reach 40 points for Western Carolina (7-8) since Kevin Martin in 2004. Torrion Brummit added 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

After both teams started slowly — with the score only 2-2 after 3:30 into the game — the Catamounts went on a 15-3 run on their way to a 46-26 halftime advantage. Western Carolina scored 60 second-half points and never trailed in the game.

The Catamounts outrebounded Milligan 51-31 to take a 7-1 edge in the all-time series.

Mike Woods, Jr. led Milligan with 14 points. Cartree Pettis added 12 points and Torian Sitton had 10.
