Smith, Winthrop defeat Charleston Southern 70-65

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Andre Smith scored 20 points, and Winthrop outscored Charleston Southern 21-10 midway through the second half and held on for a 70-65 victory in a Big South Conference game on Wednesday.

Joab Jerome had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Gideon Gamble grabbed nine rebounds with seven points for the Eagles (11-13, 5-7), who had lost two in a row.

Saah Nimley had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Arlon Harper scored 14 points and Mathiang Muo 13 for the Buccaneers (13-9, 8-3), who have lost three of four after winning eight straight.

Charleston Southern hit only 3 of 27 shots from beyond the arc.

The Eagles led 26-20 at halftime, but they pushed the advantage to 47-30 on Smith’s 3-pointer 9:52 left.

Nimley’s 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining closed it to 65-62, but Smith and Derrick Henry made five free throws between them to seal the victory.
