Carey lifts Longwood over Liberty 102-101

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) — Tristan Carey posted career highs of 40 points and 12 rebounds to propel Longwood past Liberty 102-101 Tuesday night.

Michael Kessens and Jeylani Dublin added 17 points apiece. Carey, who was 12-of-22 shooting with eight 3-pointers, set his previous high of 31 points in Longwood’s last game, a 76-61 win over Radford.

John Caleb Sanders, who had 24 points and 10 assists for Liberty (9-19, 5-9 Big South Conference), put the Flames ahead 34-33 on his free throw with 2:54 left in the opening frame. But Carey answered with a trey, sparking a 14-4 half-spanning spurt for Longwood (6-22, 3-11).

Dublin capped the run with a layup 5 minutes into the second half for a 60-45 Lancers lead. Carey hit four 3s during the run.

Liberty, trailing 94-83 with 1:20 left, hit four straight 3-pointers to claw to within 101-99 with 5 seconds showing, but could not complete the rally.
