Jackson State holds off Alabama State 70-65 in OT

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Christian Williams scored 17 points and Jackson State beat Alabama State 70-65 in overtime Thursday night.

The Tigers (9-17, 8-9 Southwestern Athletic Conference) overcame a 36-29 halftime deficit and hit free throws to beat the Hornets (9-21, 7-10).

A 3-pointer by Ryan Watts put the Hornets up 46-31. But Jackson State rallied behind Jeff Stubbs (15 points off the bench) and Williams, whose layup tied it at 62-62, forcing overtime.

Stubbs made two free throws for a 66-62 lead, then a layup. Alabama State’s Shawntez Patterson sank a 3-pointer to cut it to 68-65 with 0:03 left, but Kelsey Howard’s two foul shots clinched it.

Jackson State won despite making 2 of 18 3-pointers. Alabama State hit 6 of 20 treys. The Tigers won it at the foul line, going 20 for 22. Joshua Freelove scored 15 for Alabama State, which went 7 for 17 at the stripe.
