Letter: A new year to make it a better world

The Columbian
Published: January 2, 2013, 4:00pm

What would our country look like if we really did truly consider how our decisions and actions affect other people?

Lately, it seems more and more that we are in a culture that values “looking out for No. 1” more than it does “treating others the way you want to be treated.”

A new year is on us. Can we make it a better year just by considering how our behavior affects other people and the world at large?

Perhaps we would have fewer tragedies like that of Clackamas Town Center and Newtown, Conn.

Maybe our politicians would remember that their job is to represent us, and not special interests.

How would it be if we really did make 2013, and all the years after that, a year where we remember to do unto others as we would want them to do unto us?

Happy 2013, and God bless the entire world, not only one small part of it.
