ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Davi Millsaps passed Trey Canard on the last lap to win the season-opening race of Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Angel Stadium on Saturday night.

Canard passed Millsaps to take the lead on the 16th lap, but the Suzuki rider from Murrieta, Calif., returned the favor with a last-ditch effort for the win. Honda’s Canard, from Shawnee, Okla., finished second and KTM rider Ryan Dungey of Belle Plaine, Minn., was third.

Two-time 450SX class champion Ryan Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., started in 12th place and crashed on the eighth lap. He dropped several positions before re-entering the race.

Honda rider Eli Tomac of Durango, Colo., easily won the 250SX class race.

Next week’s race will be at Phoenix’s Chase Field.
