ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Adam Weary and Allan Chaney each scored 13 points and High Point rode a big second half to a 74-61 victory over Winthrop Saturday in a Big South Conference opener.

The Panthers (6-7, 1-0) got double-figure scoring from Devante Williams (11 points) and Dejuan McGaughy and John Brown (10 each). But it was Derrell Edwards who helped High Point make its decisive second-half run.

With Winthrop (6-7, 0-1) leading 44-42, Edwards hit three consecutive 3-pointers — his only points of the game — in a 13-0 run. After scoring just 26 points in the first half, the Panthers outscored Winthrop 48-32 after the break.

High Point made 8 of 19 3-point attempts. Winthrop was just 3 of 14 beyond the arc.

The Panthers also had a 46-31 rebounding advantage, and their bench outscored Winthrop’s 32-14.

Gideon Gamble led Winthrop with 14 points. Joab Jerome added 13 and James Bourne 10.
