NEW YORK (AP) — Cornelio Velasquez escaped serious injury in a spill Thursday afternoon at Aqueduct before bouncing back to win the $64,000 allowance feature aboard Sinai.
He was not hurt when his mount Pleasantfriday broke down in the stretch run of the fifth race and tossed him to the track.
Shaking off the spill, Velasquez later guided Sinai, the 9-5 second choice, to a 114-length victory over He’s So Chic, the 6-5 favorite.
Pleasantfriday wasn’t as fortunate. The injuries to her right foreleg were fatal.
Sinai, a gray 5-year-old trained by Rudy Rodriguez, ran the six-furlong race in 1:10.23 for his third win in 17 starts.
Sinai paid $5.90, $2.90 and $2.30. He’s So Chic returned $2.60 and $2.10 while Dr Disco paid $2.70 to show.
