GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Phoenix Coyotes center Matthew Lombardi is out indefinitely after suffering what the team said was an upper-body injury in a game against the San Jose Sharks.

Lombardi was injured in the second period of Phoenix’s 5-3 loss Thursday night and didn’t return.

Lombardi, who came to the Coyotes in a trade with Toronto on Wednesday, sat out the entire 2010-11 season with a neck injury while playing for Nashville, though coach Dave Tippett said on Friday the injury wasn’t something he’s had a problem with before. Lombardi returned last season to score 18 points in 62 games with the Maple Leafs.

The Coyotes called up forward Nick Johnson from Portland of the AHL to fill his roster spot.
