SANDY, Ore. — Firefighters in Sandy, Ore., rescued a black Lab that fell through lake ice.

Sandy Fire District Chief Gary McQueen said fire crews responded Thursday morning to find a dog named Mango 40 feet from shore with his front legs on top of the ice. He was unable to pull himself out.

Borrowing a neighbor’s boat, firefighters used an ax and a rubbish hook to pull and chop their way through 2-inch-thick ice to rescue the dog.
