MADRID (AP) — Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez has been selected captain of Spain’s Fed Cup team.

The Spanish tennis federation said Saturday that Martinez is replacing Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who resigned.

The 40-year-old Martinez became the only Spanish woman to win the Wimbledon singles title in 1994.

Federation president Jose Escanuela said “Conchita is a legend of Spanish tennis, and it is convenient that people who have given so much to our sport have the chance to continue helping.”

Spain hosts a first-round series tie with Ukraine in World Group II on Feb. 9-10 in Alicante.
