Stony Brook gets 5 in doubles, tops Maine 79-69

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — Tommy Benton posted a triple-double and Eric McAlister scored 22 points to lead Stony Brook to a 79-69 victory over Maine Saturday in America East action.

The first-place Seawolves (15-5, 6-1) had five players in double figures. While McAlister had a game-high 22, Brenton scored 15 points, grabbed 14 rebounds (5 offensive) and had 11 assists. It’s Stony Brook’s first triple-double in 14 seasons of Division I play.

Also scoring in double figures for the Seawolves were Dave Coley (13 points), Marcus Rouse (11 off the bench, including nine on three 3-pointers) and Anthony Jackson (10).

For Maine (8-12, 3-4), guard Justin Edwards recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Zarko Valjarevic led the Bears with 21 points.

Stony Brook, which led 31-22 at halftime, had a decisive edge at the free throw line. The Seawolves hit 18 of 28 foul shots. Maine was just 8 for 24.
