PARIS (AP) — France’s second biggest annual track and field meet has been canceled because of financial reasons.

The Villeneuve-d’Ascq meet drew a crowd of 10,000 in 2012 but only about 3,500 of them were paying spectators, according to local official Rudy Elegeest.

Elegeest adds “we need to take a break for 2013, to find a new formula with the clubs, the league and the federation. We need a more innovative concept.”

The meet was scheduled to take place on June 28.
