YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Kendrick Perry scored 28 points and turned in his second double-double in three games with a career-best 11 rebounds as Youngstown State defeated Horizon League-rival Valparaiso 80-68 Wednesday night.

The double-double was only Perry’s second this season and the third of his career, and his 28 points were the most he’s scored in a regulation contest this season.

The Penguins (16-6, 6-2) jumped to a 12-4 lead and led 39-28 at the intermission. Valparaiso (13-8, 5-3) trailed by double digits for most of the second half.

The Crusaders entered riding a six-game winning streak, and their 16-5 start had matched the programs best ever. Kevin Van Wijk led Valparaiso with 14 points, while LaVonte Dority had 13 off the bench.

Kamren Belin knocked down three treys en route to 16 points for Youngstown State, winners of four straight. The Penguins hit 42.1 percent (8 of 19) from 3-point range.
