COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Connor Fields will attempt to defend his time trial title when he leads a U.S. team stocked with experience into the BMX world championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

Fields, ranked second in the world, joins the elite men’s squad Tuesday that includes fellow Olympians David Herman and Nic Long. Also making the team for the competition July 24-28 are Jared Garcia, Justin Posey, Barry Nobles and Corben Sharrah.

The elite women’s team is headlined by Olympians Alise Post and Brooke Crain. They’ll be joined by Ariel Martin, who qualified for the London Games but withdrew after a training crash.

U.S. national team coach James Herrera calls the selection “one of the strongest teams USA Cycling has ever fielded for a BMX world championship.”
