Letter: Light rail is long-term solution

The Columbian
Published: July 2, 2013, 5:00pm

I lived in San Jose, Calif., for eight years. When the Bay Area Rapid Transit System was being planned, San Jose and Santa Clara County opted out of joining it. They came to regret their decision, as their population growth caused vehicular traffic on their existing roads to become truly nightmarish. I remember dreading Thanksgiving eve in particular, when even the residential roads were backed up. People are truly short-sighted here when they say we should have no light rail. Our population is growing and our present roads and bridges aren’t adequate for the traffic we have now. If we don’t have light rail as part of our overall transportation system we will suffer the same consequences as Santa Clara County did.
