Villanesca wins Belmont’s Magnolia Jackson Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) — Villanesca rallied wide to beat Expression by a half length Friday in the $100,000 Magnolia Jackson Stakes at Belmont Park. This was the first stakes victory for the 4-year-old, who has won four of her seven races.

Joel Rosario was aboard for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin in the race for fillies and mares. Villanesca ran the 612 furlongs in 1:16.45 on a fast track.

The winner paid $5.90, $3.90 and $3.10 as the 9-5 second choice. Expression returned $8 and $3.90 while Promise Me a Cat paid $3.30 to show.

Sure Route, the 8-5 favorite, finished fourth followed by Smart Stride.
