MONTREAL (AP) — Former NHL tough guy Georges Laraque is going into politics.

Laraque announced Tuesday that he would campaign for a seat from Montreal in Canada’s House of Commons.

A former Edmonton Oiler, Pittsburgh Penguin and Montreal Canadien, Laraque racked up 1,126 penalty minutes for an NHL career in which he was better known for his left jab than for his wrist shot.

But in recent years he’s also become known for his political activism as a vegan, animal-rights crusader and environmentalist.

He will represent the Green Party.

The Bourassa electoral district will require a special election because its longtime member of Parliament is leaving to run for mayor.

Laraque said in a statement: “While we do not know the election date yet, I want to start campaigning now.”
