CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — AJ Allmendinger is returning to Indianapolis Motor Speedway — but in a Grand-AM car for longtime friend Michael Shank.

Allmendinger will race in the Brickyard Grand Prix on July 26 in the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford-Riley. He’ll co-drive with Gustavo Yacaman.

Allmendinger led laps earlier this year in the Indianapolis 500 and might have had a chance to win the race if his seat belt had not come undone, forcing him to make an unscheduled pit stop. He wound up seventh.

Allmendinger has been racing for Shank since 2006, when he was part of the Rolex 24 At Daytona team.

He combined with Justin Wilson, John Pew and Ozz Negri in 2012.
