CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams says leading scorer P.J. Hairston will face “serious consequences” after being arrested last month on a drug charge.

In a statement Monday, the Hall of Fame coach says he hasn’t yet determined a punishment for Hairston. He says Hairston “knows he has made serious mistakes, and there will be serious consequences as a result.”

Hairston faces an August court hearing, isn’t enrolled in summer school, and the team is in the offseason so Williams says he will wait “until the process is complete” to decide on the punishment.

Hairston was arrested at a license checkpoint while driving a rented vehicle and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. The rental was one of two driven by Hairston and linked to a convicted felon facing pending drug charges.
