CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds first baseman Joey Votto says he has no problem with second baseman Brandon Phillips questioning why he got such a big contract.

In the upcoming issue of Cincinnati Magazine, Phillips says he’s “still scarred” that the front office gave Votto a 10-year, $225 million extension in 2012, when he still had two years left on his contract. Phillips was in his option year and thought his chances of staying were slim as a result. He got an extension a few days later.

Votto said Friday that he enjoys Phillips’ candor and his style. They started for the NL in the All-Star game in New York on Wednesday.

Phillips said he didn’t say anything disrespectful toward Votto. He reiterated that he thought Votto’s deal meant Phillips would be gone.
