PARSIPPANY, N.J. (AP) — State Police say a horse scheduled to race at the Meadowlands was euthanized after a horse trailer crashed and overturned on a northern New Jersey highway.

A veterinarian euthanized Hay Beautiful shortly after the crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. Friday on Route 80 East in Parsippany. NJ.com (http://bit.ly/127iymf) reports the horse apparently suffered a broken back and was unable to stand up on its own despite several attempts.

Hay Beautiful and another horse in the trailer, Kissmatt, were scheduled to compete in races Friday night. Kissmatt sustained minor injuries in the accident, but did not compete.

Two Florida men who were in the pickup truck that was hauling the trailer were not injured.

State Police say the trailer apparently overturned after hitting a pothole.
