A 65-year-old Woodland man was taken to a local hospital Sunday afternoon after his bicycle collided with a pickup on the right shoulder of Interstate 5.

The Washington State Patrol said Gerardus C. Vandersalm was northbound on the freeway’s shoulder two miles south of Woodland.

The report indicated he veered into the right lane and was struck by a northbound 1999 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Jeffrey G. Hicks, 37, of Vancouver. Hicks was pulling a boat and trailer.

Vandersalm was wearing a helmet but the patrol report called it a “non-USDOT-compliant helmet.”

Vandersalm was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, where he was a patient Sunday night. His condition was not available.

The accident happened at 12:23 p.m.

Vandersalm was cited for unsafe lane travel.
