Have you ever stopped your car to let animals cross the street or stopped on a walk to feed animals? I know we all have and I also know that we have all driven past a homeless person on the street without doing anything. My point? Human nature drives average people to care more about cute ducks and hamsters than our fellow human beings. Helping the homeless is important to maintaining a safe, clean community and we need to make it our top priority.
Donating to nonprofit organizations is a great way to fight homelessness. We have two such organizations here locally, Share (http://sharevancouver.org) and the homeless shelter of Open House Ministries (http://sheltered.org). These groups give food, money and gifts to the needy to help them get back on their feet.
If you don’t feel right giving money to the people on the streets, give food instead. Pack extra food before work in the morning then, throughout the day, you can give out apples and sandwiches to the homeless and needy.
People need to realize that the life of any person is worth more than that of a chipmunk.
