KELSO — A Cowlitz County Jail inmate is facing charges of assaulting a guard and attempting to escape after spraying the officer with her own pepper spray.

Officer Tina M. Huft was spitting and coughing with her eyes swollen shut after a struggle Saturday at the jail. The jail staff heard her radio for help and subdued the 19-year-old inmate.

The Daily News reports reports Huft had been trying to handcuff Jeran R. Applefield to mover her to another cell when Applefield snatched the pepper spray off Huft’s belt and sprayed her in the face.
