SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Saginaw won his fifth straight race Thursday with a 1 3/4-length victory in the $100,000 John Morrissey Purse at Saratoga Race Course.
One of the most popular horses in New York, Saginaw took control with three-sixteenths of a mile to go and won for the ninth time in 11 races. The Morrissey was his 21st career win.
Junior Alvarado was aboard the 7-year-old gelding, who covered the 6 12 furlongs on a muddy track in 1:16.47. The race, with only four starters, was for horses foaled in New York.
Trainer David Jacobson shares in the ownership with Drawing Away Stable. Saginaw earned $60,000 for this victory.
Saginaw paid $7.40 and $4.10. Runner-up Mine Over Matter paid $3.60 to place. There was no show wagering.
