TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State’s Randy Spetman is out as athletics director and the university will soon begin a search for his replacement.

FSU President Eric Barron made the announcement Wednesday, one day before Spetman is scheduled to unveil a strategic plan to the university’s Board of Trustees designed to shape the future of Seminole athletics.

Spetman, 59, will remain at the school for the next eight months as a senior adviser to the department until his contract expires in February 2014.

Barron says senior associate athletic director Vanessa Fuchs would serve as the interim until Spetman’s successor is found.

Spetman came to Florida State in 2008 when the university was on NCAA probation following an academic cheating scandal and also when pressure was mounting on longtime coach Bobby Bowden to retire.
