MEDFORD, Ore. — Police have arrested an Oregon man, saying he took his little dog outside in the backyard and shot it after it defecated in the house.

Authorities say 60-year-old Terry Nixon of Medford was jailed Thursday on charges of aggravated animal abuse, unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangering, and disorderly conduct. He was held on $17,000 bail.

Police went to Nixon’s house Wednesday after a witness reported the shooting.

Authorities say a witness gave them the body of the dead Chihuahua-Jack Russell terrier mix after taking it out of a trash can and taking it home.

Acting on a search warrant, police also seized a 9 mm pistol from Nixon’s home.
