CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands surged up a rain-soaked final climb to win the second stage Sunday at the Tour of Switzerland, and Australian rider Cameron Meyer retained the overall lead.
Mollema passed Ryder Hesjedal of Canada with about 400 yards left in the ski resort of Crans-Montana. He clocked 2 hours, 43 minutes for the 72.8-mile route. The stage was shortened because snow blocked some mountain passes.
Mollema was 11 seconds ahead of Mathias Frank of Switzerland, who finished in the same time as Frenchman Thiubaut Pinot and fourth-place Hesjedal.
Meyer finished in the main group and leads by 3 seconds over Hesjedal. Frank trails Meyer by 5 seconds in third.
Monday’s stage is a 127.3-mile route from Montreux to Meiringen, including a category-one climb.
