It is amazing to me that we here in Portland and Vancouver will spend $3 billion or more to reduce the water clearance of a major bridge from 178 feet to 116 feet. Other more enlightened places in the U.S. are doing just the opposite. The Port of N.Y.-N.J. is spending over $1 billion to increase the clearance of the Bayonne Bridge to 215 feet from 151 feet. The Port of Long Beach, Calif. is raising the clearance of the Gerald Desmond Bridge from 155 feet to 200 feet at a cost of over $1 billion. These enlightened groups are looking to the future. We are doing the opposite. We are spending taxpayer dollars to close down the future of our beautiful Columbia River.
