Mets place Turner on DL, make Wheeler extra player

ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets have placed infielder Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list with pain in his ribcage, setting up a roster shuffle that led to top prospect Zach Wheeler being added as the extra player for a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves.

Wheeler is making his major league debut in Game 2 Tuesday night, but he’ll technically be optioned back to the minors after the game no matter the outcome.

The Mets put Turner on the DL after he received a cortisone shot. Right-hander Scott Atchison was activated from the DL to bolster the bullpen.

Because Wheeler is joining the team under a rule that allows 26-man rosters for doubleheaders, he won’t have to spend 10 days in the minors before rejoining what will become a six-man rotation.
