Talking Points: Heat are must-see TV

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

The Heatles move the needle.

As the Miami Heat repeated as champions in Game 7 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night, the ratings delivered the second most-watched NBA game on the ABC network.

According to the Nielsen ratings, more than 26 million viewers tuned in to watch the game. This shouldn’t be too surprising considering that the Heat have played in two of the three most watched NBA games, on any network, since 1998.

The NBA Finals Game 7 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics in 2010 dominated with 28.2 million viewers. Still, nothing compares to the Chicago Bulls/Utah Jazz Game 6 in 1998, also known as The Shot Over Bryon Russell Game.

Michael Jordan’s final highlight in a Bulls’ uniform generated a 22.8 rating with 35.9 million viewers and still stands as the most watched NBA game ever.

Now that we’ve got the ratings to back up the fact that the majority of self-respecting sports fans watched Game 7, let’s run down the list of things that we (thankfully) did not catch on Thursday.

• Witnessing the Mariners blow a seven-run lead, the second-largest in team history, to lose 10-9 in Anaheim.

• Tuning in to the NHL Network as it tried to fill programming on a day off for the Stanley Cup Finals.

• And finally, watching a repeat of “Two and a Half Men.”

Opposing fans will have to think twice before yelling “Notre Dame stinks!” next season.

Two companies, Cloudbreak Group and Steiner Collectibles, are pairing up to develop fragrances for Notre Dame, the university’s director of licensing Michael Low told the South Bend Tribune.

ND Gold Eau De Toilette for men and Lady Irish Eau De Parfum will be available this fall, with 3.4-ounce bottles expected to retail for $62, he said.

“The University of Notre Dame’s practice is to license fewer companies than most other universities, and we encourage our licensing partners to develop innovative products of high quality that are not commonly available in the marketplace,” he said in an email.

Other scented products will include women’s shower gel and body lotion; men’s hair and body wash; and aftershave balm, he said.

So you could say the Irish’s fragrance is manly, yes, but she will like it too.
